What is pinyin?

By Uranbek Anarbaev · Updated

Short answer

Pinyin (Hanyu Pinyin, 汉语拼音) is the standard system for writing the sounds of Mandarin Chinese with the Latin alphabet. It shows how a character is pronounced, including its tone, but it is not a translation and not a replacement for characters.

Pinyin in one minute

The name means "spelling sounds": hàn yǔ pīn yīn. Each Chinese syllable is written with an initial (a consonant, which can be missing), a final (a vowel or vowel group) and a tone. For example mā is 妈 (mother) and ma is 吗 (a question particle). Same letters, different tone, different word.

Pinyin was developed in the 1950s in the People's Republic of China and has been the standard teaching system for Mandarin ever since. It is also the basis of how most people type Chinese on phones and computers.
