Hanyu Pinyin converter

By Uranbek Anarbaev · Updated

Short answer

Paste Chinese text into the converter and it returns Hanyu Pinyin, the standard romanization of Mandarin. Choose tone marks, tone numbers or no tones, then copy the pinyin alone or together with the characters.

Convert Chinese to Hanyu Pinyin

  1. Open the converter and paste or type Chinese text into the input field.
  2. Pick the pinyin style in Settings: tone marks, tone numbers, or no tones.
  3. Read the result under the characters. Switch the 汉字, Pinyin and English layers on or off as you need.
  4. Copy pinyin, Chinese + pinyin, or Chinese + pinyin + English.

What the converter outputs

The result is Hanyu Pinyin, the system used for teaching and typing Mandarin in mainland China and in most Chinese courses. The tool reads each word in context, so a character with more than one reading gets the one that fits the sentence:

银行行走
yín háng xíng zǒu

This is why a converter that works character by character often gets 行 wrong, and one that works on words usually does not. It is not perfect: names, rare words and ambiguous sentences can still produce a reading you will want to check.

"Han yu pin yin", "hanyu pinyin" and "pinyin": the same thing

People write the name in several ways: han yu pin yin, hanyu pinyin, pinyin. All of them mean hàn yǔ pīn yīn, the Chinese phonetic spelling system. The converter does not care how you spell the name; you just give it Chinese text.

What it does not do

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as pinyin converter and pinyin generator tools?

Yes. "Converter", "generator" and "translator" are different names for a tool that turns Chinese text into pinyin.

Does it work offline?

The conversion runs in your browser, but the page itself and some features (listening, saving, English layer) use online services, so do not rely on it offline.

Can I use it for traditional characters?

Yes, the converter reads both simplified and traditional characters.

How many characters can I convert?

Paste normal paragraphs without problems. Very long texts are better converted in sections.
